Orchestral-pop powerhouse Owen Pallett is dropping his video game-inspired moniker “Final Fantasy” and sticking to his real name from now on. The artist left a message for his fans earlier this month, saying: “I named the band Final Fantasy, as the experience– and the tone of the material– was reminiscent of the hours and hours I had spent as an adolescent playing those epic JRPGs. But the laws of trademark infringement exist for good reason, and so I am voluntarily retiring my band name. In the new year, my record Heartland is coming out…and I feel it is in my own best interests to definitively distinguish my music from Square/Enix’s games.”
We think it’s a good move and help Pallett be taken more seriously as an artist. Find out more about Pallett’s new record and the name “change” at his official site. And now, for old time’s sake, here’s one of our favorite covers from Palett: Final Fantasy’s take on Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy.”
