Do we really need another online music service or music magazine? When the website gives you exclusive behind-the-scenes performances and channels money to relief organizations in Africa, the answer is yes. (RED)WIRE is a new digital magazine from Bono’s (RED) organization that features exclusive music from some of the world’s top recording artists, and funds medicine and AIDS research for people in Africa. For every five people that sign up for (RED)WIRE, enough money is generated to help treat one person living with HIV.
Each week, members of the site receive updates about development programs in Africa, along with a new song or video from a major artist (the song automatically synchs with your iTunes list). Tomorrow, the site releases an exclusive clip of Oasis’ Noel Gallagher performing an acoustic version of “Waiting For The Rapture” backstage at the band’s sold-out Madison Square Gardens show last December. Photographer Josh Cheuse filmed Noel in an unusual backstage location with just his guitar and voice resonating off some strangely-tiled walls…and faucets. Other artists involved with the charity include U2, Coldplay, Jay-Z, The Killers, Bob Dylan and REM, though it’s not clear yet if they have similar “behind-the-scenes” videos on tap. Still, $5 a month for new music and a good cause sounds like a deal to us.
Check out a preview of Gallagher’s song below, and head over to redwire.com for more details about the program.
