When did the leather suitcase become fashionable again? Perhaps it was when Wes Andersen loaded them onto the train in The Darjeeling Limited. Or maybe it’s thanks to people like The Sartorialist, who often photographs subjects carrying around leather suitcases or at least gamely posing beside a ridiculously luxurious piece of luggage. Or maybe weary travelers are finally just wanting to give their arms and shoulders a rest from the all-too-ubiquitous weekend bag.
For those looking for a new, well-made alternative, we’ve found our favorite pick: a custom-built suitcase from Vancouver-based Palmer and Sons. The small, father-and-son business produces unique leather pieces using traditional methods and vintage tools, ensuring superior craftsmanship and attention to detail. We especially like the No 03 XXS model (above), made from a 10 oz London Tan Bridle Leather with reinforced brass rivets and a cocobolo and walnut handle. We also love the slightly larger No 03 M model (below), which is made from a 10 oz Chestnut Bridle Leather, with a handmade walnut handle, and brass and steel rivets throughout. Aside from the quality and durability of the materials, we also love the unique carrying methods for the suitcase, which can be gripped through the traditional handle, slung across the shoulder, or worn as a backpack, thanks to the adjustable straps. When the product looks this good, it’s easy to see why everyone would want to own a suitcase again. And with only a limited number of pieces of each model produced, you can be sure you have something that is as special and unique as it looks.
