Newest New York Times Contributor is… Bono?

Different media outlets are reporting today that Bono has been asked to write a regular column for the New York Times, beginning early next year. It’s unclear what Bono will be writing about, though one would have to assume that Africa, poverty and politics will be high on his list. According to Times editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal, the U2 lead singer isn’t getting paid and is simply writing the column to muse on issues close to his heart.

We all know about Bono’s humanitarianism and vast knowledge of global issues, but will people be able to take him seriously as a newspaper columnist? Penning lyrics for an album is a whole different ball-game than writing a long-form column for one of the most widely-read and respected newspapers in the world. But then again, this is a guy who has surprised us time after time with what he can accomplish. His influence certainly extends beyond music. And if this gig proves successful, it could divert much-needed attention and dollars to some amazing organizations. Your thoughts?
