Our Five Best Bets for Fashion’s Night Out

September 9th, 2010

With New York City’s Fashion’s Night Out just around the corner, deciding on a plan of attack may be just as daunting as picking out an outfit. With a myriad of  events (over 950!) going down all around town, we picked our five best bets for avoiding the crush of people while still experiencing the best that FNO has to offer. Good luck and good shopping!

Moscot @ The Moscot Gallery: Our favorite eyewear designers will welcome world-renowned recording artist and DJ Theophilus Monk to The Moscot Gallery (118 Orchard Street) where all Moscot originals will be available for 15% off. House Jams Wine will be providing free refreshments making this event the perfect starting point for your epic FNO journey.

Patty Smyth @ Bulgari: Though this may be one of the higher profile events, the opportunity to see an American rock legend play two sets (for free!) at the luxury goods retailer’s 5th Avenue outpost is simply a can’t-miss. Expect a crowd.

“Non Fashion People’s” Fashion Night Out @ Partner & Spade: The always avant-garde retail space is once again pushing the limits with its showcase of non-designer’s designs. A police officer, a toddler, a farmer, and Vena Cava designer Lisa Mayock’s father will all be featuring original pieces. This one’s for the sartorially adventurous.

Sonic Youth does FNO @ Sportmax: Rock renaissance couple Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth fame will be teaming up for this indie extravaganza at Maxmara’s affordable West Broadway atelier. Kim will be unveiling her new collection “Carte Blanche” while hubby Moore DJ’s.

Sweet Treat @ Odin: When the sun starts to rise and you think you’re all shopped out, head to Odin to re-fuel. Designers Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos will be serving up Brooklyn Brewery Brown Ale and Honey ice cream creates sepcifically for FNO. Yum!

Barneys Hosts First-Ever “Trunk-a-Palooza”

April 18th, 2010

It turns out trunk shows aren’t just reserved for ladies who lunch anymore. Barneys New York is giving everyday fashion fans a chance to get first dibs on the fall collections, with a one-day trunk show event dubbed “Trunk-a-Palooza.” Taking place this Wednesday, the event will feature ten fall/winter 2010 trunk shows happening simultaneously. Among the designers participating: Corduroy faves Shipley & Halmos and Rag & Bone, as well as Alexander Wang, Richard Chai, Vena Cava, Helmut Lang and 3.1 Phillip Lim (photos above). Many of these designers will also be on-hand to show their collections to shoppers personally. In addition to scoping out the new pieces before they hit the store racks, there will also be limited-edition items available for sale.

The event takes place this Wednesday, April 21st on the Co-op floor of Barneys flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York. Drinks, designer appearances, and live music from DJ Beverly Bond between 5-8 pm. Details online at barneys.com.

Vena Cava Carnival Block Party

September 7th, 2009

Still looking for itinerary ideas for Fashion’s Night Out? If you’re thinking of heading into Brooklyn, stop by Bird in Williamsburg where designers Vena Cava are throwing a disco-themed carnival block party to mark the occasion. In addition to carnival games, cotton candy and the ever popular dunk tank, the party will feature a specially-curated photo exhibition and video installation by fashion photographer Susanna Howe, limited edition Vena Cava dresses for $100 (a steal!), the Van Leeuwen ice cream truck and a DJ set by Nancy Whang (from LCD Soundsystem and The Juan Maclean), DFA’s Justin Miller and others.

It’s more than just fashion, fun and games though. Proceeds from the event will benefit Added Value — an urban farm initiative in Red Hook that seeks to promote sustainable development. Check out the flyer for more details.
