Weekend Viewing: UNIQLO’s “Voices of New York”

August 13th, 2011

Uniqlo has certainly come a long way from the brand’s 1949 inception. Starting out in Japan as a casual clothing company known for their affordable and fashionable basics, the company has grown exponentially, with stores across Asia, Europe, and North America. The brand has also received international recognition within the fashion community for their ongoing collaboration with Jil Sander, and their Save Japan! T-shirt collection which features designs by Lady Gaga and Karl Lagerfeld. Later this fall, the Uniqlo team will celebrate another achievement, the grand opening of the brand’s global flagship store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

The Voices of New York campaign is part of the Uniqlo team’s effort to promote the grand opening. The campaign features profiles of New York City’s hippest and most inspirational residents. The profiles include interviews with Tumblr founder Davis Karp, as well as digital producer and blogger, Yoshi. We love the campaign because it’s such a fresh take on a store launch; we don’t feel like Uniqlo is necessarily trying to sell us anything, but we’re certainly ready to buy. Uniqlo x Save Japan!

May 27th, 2011

On March 11th 2011, a devastating earthquake struck northeastern Japan and the subsequent tsunami claimed thousands of lives. Two months later, the tremendous global response continues. Save Japan! has partnered with Uniqlo, Conde Nast Group and ten of fashion’s most notable personalities (including Karl Lagerfeld, Lady Gaga, Alber Elbaz and Charlize Theron) to create a limited-edition collection of T-shirts featuring messages of encouragement. We love that Uniqlo is combating the notion that fashion is vapid with this collection. Uniqlo is planning to donate 100 million yen from the sale of the shirts to benefit the Japanese Red Cross to aid affected by the disaster. The shirts will be available in Uniqlo stores on June 25th and are priced very reasonably at $19.90. Will you be picking up a shirt (or two)?

Sneak Peek: Jil Sander for Uniqlo

September 29th, 2009

Here’s your first look at two pieces from the +J Jil Sander for Uniqlo collection, set to hit Uniqlo stores next month. The capsule mens collection features more of the minimalist looks Jil Sander is known for, with trim suits and dark wash jeans, along with slim collared shirts and fall accessories in a basic palette of clean grays, blacks and blues. We’re already eyeing the black piped blazer seen below…

Video: Agyness Deyn for UNIQLO

May 21st, 2009

We’ll admit, we weren’t exactly sure what to make of the announcement that UNIQLO had hired Agyness Deyn to be the face of their summer campaign. After all, could a model known more for her rock-goddess inspired frocks these days really represent UNIQLO’s signature line of basics and sportswear? The answer, according to the photos above, is yes. Despite her recent penchant for eyeliner and leather jackets, Deyn looks positively radiant showing off the company’s new line of bright and colorful tops, tees and shorts. Even better: the new UNIQLO commercial running in Japan, showing Deyn and former Calvin Klein exclusive Gabriel Aubrey (a.k.a. Mr. Halle Berry) running in slo-mo through the busy streets of New York. UNIQLO’s summer line hits stores in June. In the meantime, check out Agyness and Gabriel’s quirky commercial spot below:

Combat the Cold in Style

February 7th, 2009

So it’s 30 degrees and miserable here in New York, with snow alternating with rain, and slush puddles spilling over the sidewalks. It’s windy and chilly and frankly, we’re all better off indoors planning a quick warm weather getaway. But if you must step outside, here are five things we’ve come to love over the past few weeks, that will help you fight the frostbite and look good while doing it.

1. Henrik Vibskov scarf

We’ve been eyeing these wool and silk scarves by Denmark-native Vibskov for weeks now and we think we finally have an excuse to buy it with the cold temperatures outside. The scarves feature Vibskov’s unique colorblock patterns and weaving, with fringing on all sides. Available at retailers like Scout (L.A.) and Seven (New York) and online at the Henrik Vibskov “V-Store.”

2. Phillip Lim 3.1 Grey Border Sweater

We found this boxy heather-grey sweater at Barney’s last month and it’s quickly become our new favorite item in our closet. Knit in a soft wool/cotton/cashmere blend, it features an extra-wide neck and is cropped at the bottom, allowing you to wear it slightly sloppy on its own, or as a layering piece over a shirt and tie. Available at stores like Barney’s and Oak (New York).

3. Uniqlo “HeatTech” tees and tops

Our design director Sula told us about Uniqlo’s new line of “heat-retaining” innerwear months ago, commenting on how toasty and warm she felt in her “HeatTech” t-shirt. The shirts are woven out of a specially-designed hollow fiber that captures and retains warmth, by absorbing moisture and converting it to heat. Milk protein, containing natural amino acids, has been mixed with the fibers to ensure the fabric is smooth and soft to the touch, while a special antibacterial agent takes care of any unpleasant odors. Though the product is just catching on here in the U.S., HeatTech has already become a winter wardrobe essential in Japan, with 20 million units sold last year alone.

4. Organic Bath and Massage Oil from Bella Pella

There’s nothing better to after a blisteringly cold day than a hot soak in the tub. This natural massage oil from Montreal-based Bella Pella (one of our favorite bath and body lines) is made from certified organic soy beans and sunflower seed oil. Natural essential oils from grapefruit, mandarin, geranium and lavender provide a subtle and pleasant scent that will leave you feeling uplifted and relaxed.

5. Maribelle Hot Chocolate

Our favorite cup of hot chocolate in New York comes from Maribelle‘s Cacao Bar in SoHo. Grab a seat in the tiny ornate back room, with vintage chandeliers hanging from the ceilings and old Chaplin movies playing in the background, and order yourself a cup of hot chocolate made from rich, single-origin Colombian cacao. This smoky, perfectly smooth hot chocolate comes in four flavors: Aztec Original (60%), Aztec Dark (70%), Mocha and Spicy. The pastries there aren’t bad either, but who has room after downing a whole mug of cocoa? We’ll take the eclairs to go!
