Todd Selby in Toronto

June 14th, 2010

Photographer and illustrator Todd Selby is in Toronto this week for a personal appearance and book signing at Holt Renfrew. The interior, fashion, and portrait photographer is promoting his book, “The Selby is in Your Place,” which showcases the home environments of authors, musicians, designers and artists. The project was inspired by Selby’s popular website, Theselby.com, which gives viewers a chance to peek into the private spaces of some of Selby’s favorite people.

Selby’s lunchtime appearance at Holt’s takes place this Wednesday from noon to 1:30 pm. Details on the flyer below.

The Selby Is In Your Place

February 3rd, 2010

We’ve blogged about our fondness for Todd Selby’s eponymous “open house” website before and now that our good friends at Abrams have sent us an advance copy of his book, we think we like him — and his project — even more.

“The Selby Is in Your Place” is a beautiful hardcover book inspired by Todd Selby’s portraits of creative people and their homes. The book — compiled by Selby — is as much a photography tome as it is a scrapbook, offering a sometimes casual, but always intimate glimpse into the lives and inspirations of today’s foremost authors, musicians, artists and designers. Selby has said that one’s “personal style is always reflected in their private spaces,” and the book features the eclectic quarters of people like Simon Doonan, Jonathan Adler, Terence Koh, Lou Douillon and Olivier Zahm. Each profile is accompanied by photos of various rooms in the subject’s home, as well as Selby’s watercolor portraits of the subjects and an illustrated questionnaire, which Selby asks each sitter to fill out. Many of the people and spaces appearing in the book were selected exclusively for this project, and have not been profiled on the website. The result is a visual and colorful anthology, that allows fans of The Selby (and newcomers alike) to peek into the unique spaces and inspirational interiors of people that inspire us.

“The Selby Is In Your Place” is 256 pages. The book will be released later this spring by Abrams Publishing. You can find out more about the book at theselby.com and pre-order a copy on Amazon.com.

A Peek Inside The Selby…

November 2nd, 2009

I don’t consider myself to be a collector of any sorts. I don’t go to the antique market every week to sift through piles of old pocket watches and family photographs, but I think that may change very soon. Recently, a friend introduced me to The Selby, a website created by Todd Selby, that features interior spaces belonging to some of the most creative people around. The Selby compiles photographs from the homes and studios of working art directors, designers, chefs and painters into quasi-photo essays. The photographs are beautiful and capture intimate details of the interviewees’ lives, featuring everything from tiny salt and pepper shakers to extensive assortments of animal bones, and of course, some art on display as well. Each space is authentic, and makes me feel like I should start an eccentric collection. Surely, if a space is inspirational, your work can only flourish.

The website features photographs from the homes of everyone from Inès de la Fressange in Paris, to Mark (the Cobrasnake) Hunter in L.A. Although it is hard to pick a favorite, I think my vote goes to the home of artist, Fanny Bostrom and photographer, Bill Gentle (photos above). The bocce balls and adorable kittens might have something to do with it. Check out www.theselby.com to check out the awe-inspiring photographs, which are topped off with cute watercolour portraits and obscure question and answer interviews. You can also buy books with some of the photographs taken in Sydney and Paris, an excellent way to start your awe-inspiring book collection and perhaps find some new ideas to make your home and creative space come to life as well.
