We’ve seen a number of amazing designer collaborations with Target in recent years, but far too often, the shopping experience has been reserved solely for the ladies (think Rodarte and Jason Wu). But Target’s latest collaboration is aimed squarely and expertly at the guys.
New York menswear boutique Odin will debut an exclusive, limited-time only collection at Target this September. Featuring sweaters, henleys, button-downs, pants, shoes and accessories, the collection caters to both the sartorially savvy and the guy who’s worn the same pair of jeans his whole life. Expect to see a mix of refined and rugged, with a focus on menswear staples and good quality basics, plus a few more aggressively styled pieces scattered in as well.
And while the clothes will be sold in a nationwide department store (as opposed to the posh interiors of Odin’s three Manhattan outposts), store owners Eddy Chai and Paul Birardi promise the same masculine yet cosmopolitan style that they’ve been known for over the years, now with Target’s commitment to affordable pricing and quality. The Odin for Target collection is in stores and online at Target.com on September 9th.
Tired of listening to your Mariah Carey Christmas album for the umpteenth time? Target has teamed up with some of their favorite artists of the year for an exclusive collection of new holiday songs and covers, available for free download at Target.com.
Our fave track is a sunny, holiday bopper featuring Bethany Cosentino of indie pop band Best Coast, trading verses and harmonies with boyfriend Nathan Williams, from rock band, Wavves. The song is called “Got Something For You” and it’s a delightful two-minute romp about hiding presents until the big day. And while we normally feel schmaltzy toward real-life couples who release holiday duets (see Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson, in happier times), this is a song we can actually listen to — and have playing on repeat throughout this festive time of year. Check out Best Coast and Wavves performing “Got Something for You” below and head over to Target.com to download the song for free.
We profiled LA-based designers (and artist collective) Poketo in Issue 2 of Corduroy and we’ve been fans of theirs ever since. Ted and Angie have — dare we say — launched the careers of many local and international artists, by inviting them to collaborate on exclusive tees and accessories under the Poketo banner. Now they’re extending their collaborative spirit in a big way, with a limited-edition line of wallets, tote bags, and umbrellas set to launch exclusively for Target stores this month.
We spoke to Angie to get the scoop on the new project and to find out how a tiny company built by friends and artists got to design a coveted collection with one of the nation’s largest and most desirable retailers.
How did this collaboration come about?
We actually started talking to Target a couple of years ago. There was a lull and once we finally got the go ahead, it happened so quickly. There are 21 different artists that are involved with 40 different artworks in a 52-piece collection. Between gathering the artwork, designs, silhouettes and talking to all 21 artists involved, we’ve worked very hard in the past year to get this all together!

After some inspired high-fashion collaborations with Alexander McQueen and Rodarte, Target is going back to its laidback roots with the announcement of Gaby Basora as the next designer to release a collaboration with the department store. Basora, the designer for breezy All-American line Tucker, is set to release a line of coats, dresses and lingerie as part of Target’s “GO International” series, which features up-and-coming designers. Basora is known for her playful prints and rich colors, which feature prominently on her collection of flirty dresses and separates. A former stylist, Basora knows how to make bold looks work for a mass audience, and it’ll be interesting to see what she brings to her Target collection. It will also be interesting to see if she sticks to using her trademark silks, or if she’ll dip into jerseys and cottons to make the line fit the Target price-point. Either way, Basora is a brilliant choice for the project, presenting a beautiful and accessible line for the Target consumer, that plays to the store’s young and trendy audience. The Gaby Basora for Target collection hits stores in September.
23-year-old Gia Coppola, grand-daughter of legendary director Francis Ford Coppola, is following in her famous family’s footsteps by taking a stab at directing. Coppola helms the lens for the new “Zac Posen for Target” campaign video. The video follows nouvelle girl group The Like — Copolla’s friends since high school — as the prep for a show backstage and then rocking out in front of a psychedelic light show.. all while showing off their new designer duds. The clip starts out soft and moody, before breaking out into an explosive and frenetic free for all.
Copolla says she was inspired by old footage of The Beatles in their hotel room, and liked the contrast between relaxing behind-the-scenes and then going crazy on stage. The rock-star video is the perfect companion piece to Posen’s collection, which the designer says was inspired by people like Lou Reed and Jim Morrison. As for The Like? If you like what you see in the video (no pun intended), you can also catch the band performing at Posen’s 24-hour Target pop-up store and party next week. In the meantime, check out Gia Coppola’s short film for Zac Posen, below:
