Launch Party Thanks

June 11th, 2009

Thanks to everyone who came out for our Issue 5 launch party this week. We somehow managed to pack 300 people into the Tribeca Grand, where they were treated to an amazing live performance by Class Actress, and DJ sets from Dima Dubson, Mandy B and Mandy C. The music kept the party going all night, the drinks (courtesy of Tanqueray) were flowing and we got a chance to hang out with some old friends and also meet some new ones. New York was where the idea of Corduroy was first born nearly two years ago, and it was great to finally celebrate our successes with the people — and the city — that made it all happen. Check out a couple photos from the party below and click through our gallery for even more pics.

Thanks to Laura and Yadira at the Tribeca Grand, Jan, Chris and Clement for their help in putting the night together. And thanks again to everyone who came out to support us! We appreciate it.

Sample Sale: Steven Alan

May 14th, 2009

We stopped by the Steven Alan sample sale yesterday, where we got a chance to say hi to our good friend Danny and to Steven himself. We haven’t seen Steven since we interviewed him for Issue 4 of Corduroy…but enough self-promotion… Steven’s got a great sample sale going on now with steep discounts on his namesake line of shirts, pants and outerwear, plus deals on Matt Bernson shoes, Sophomore clothes, and Rachel Nasvik’s line of boho-chic bags and accessories. The sale runs until May 17th at the Steven Alan showroom on 87 Franklin Street in Tribeca.

Port Authority Pop-Up Shop

May 1st, 2009

Up until today, Manhattan’s Port Authority bus terminal could hardly be considered a shopping destination, let alone a mecca for the fashion elite. With just a couple of discount clothing chains and a Duane Reade inside, there was nothing worth braving the crowds of disoriented tourists and commuters for. But that is all set to change, with the launch of a pop-up shop inside the Port Authority’s event space. Organizers Refinery29 worked with the Times Square Alliance to bring in a rotating mix of big name designers and local talent, all contributing pieces at up to 60% off. Think of it as a massive sample sale, with large crowds likely included. The month-long event will feature discounted duds from designers like the increasingly ubiquitous Rick Owens and our personal fave, Helmut Lang. This week’s list of designers include past Corduroy subjects Steven Alan and Rachel Comey, as well as current Corduroy feature Charlotte Ronson. The store’s interior will change each week to match the look and feel of the brands on sale, and many designers are offering unique pieces exclusive to the event. Check out the full list of designers and find out more details about the project HERE.

Alexandra Cassaniti Money Bag

April 15th, 2009

Behold the money bag, made from recycled money satchels once used to transfer bills from the Federal Reserve. Ironic? Yes. Appropriate? Maybe not. But you can’t help but appreciate the humor and stroke of creative genius that went into making this bag. It’s from Alexandra Cassaniti — a former designer for Steven Alan, who branched off to start her own namesake line of rocker-chic tops, tees and totes. The money bag is made from 100% cotton in a heavyweight canvas, and features a leather base, straps and side detailing. It’s the kind of bag you’ll want to toss around and rough up, if only to wear it in a little and take away some of the obvious stigmas associated with carrying around a bag with a huge dollar sign on it.

The new fall lookbook from Cassaniti features young, LA-types lounging around with the bags laying casually by their feet. The country may be in a recession, but they don’t seem to have a care in the world. Maybe it’s un-PC, but we kind of dig it. This might actually be the best time to have fun with fashion and shake things up a bit. And the money bag is the perfect accessory for people who don’t take themselves too seriously. Sadly, while the bag was stuffed with thousands of dollars in its past life, it’ll cost you more than a couple of bills to purchase it this fall. But we think it’s worth it, and it could be just the good luck charm needed to make sure we all get some money of our own real soon.
