Shipley & Halmos’ “Start Up Brand Label Kit”

December 19th, 2011

As the holiday shopping season winds down, we have to point out a great stocking stuffer from New York-based label, Shipley & Halmos. An exclusive item to their online Things! by S&H Holiday Superstore, the “Startup Brand Label Kit” is a great item for that special person with a future in fashion. Mapping out the necessary components of distinctive brand identity on woven labels, each label, in a series of three, comes included with fill in the blank templates to demonstrate proper branding. Designers Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos have provided a tongue-in-cheek take on designer labels, showing that at its very core, fashion – and all the hard work – can still be fun!

The labels are available in a set of three sizes (3¾ x 2″ / Basic: 3 x ½” / Size: 1½ x 3″) and retail for $5. Get shopping HERE.

These Are a Few of Their Favorite Things…

December 9th, 2010

We just wrapped up our first annual “Pop-Up Closet” in Toronto, where we curated a space designed like a closet full of our favorite things. Now, two New York-based companies are opening up “shops” of their own, to showcase some of their favorite items and accessories, just in time for the holidays!

Our friends Tina and Esther at design firm Little Fury (who produce the super cool StartHere line of notebooks) have launched the StartHere Mart — an online shop that features a selection of “functional, pretty things” by independent designers and artists. The items are as quirky and diverse as Tina and Esther themselves, with everything from canvas totes and ceramics, to handmade ping-pong paddles, vegan almond lip balm and fancy ginger candy from Indonesia.

Of course, you’ll find StartHere’s signature line of stationery (pictured at left). There’s even a special selection of products for 99 cents! And if you loved the Furni x Raised by Wolves digital watch that we featured at our Pop-Up Closet, you’re in luck — the Montreal-based firm (and Corduroy faves) have sent a new batch for the StartHere Mart, along with their signature line of handmade wooden alarm clocks. Best of all, you’ll be shopping for a good cause. A portion of the proceeds from every sale will go toward helping non-profit groups, Healing Haiti (which is working to provide relief to children and families in the still-ravaged country) and Opportunity International (an organization that provides small business loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries). Visit startheremart.com for more information.

Barneys Hosts First-Ever “Trunk-a-Palooza”

April 18th, 2010

It turns out trunk shows aren’t just reserved for ladies who lunch anymore. Barneys New York is giving everyday fashion fans a chance to get first dibs on the fall collections, with a one-day trunk show event dubbed “Trunk-a-Palooza.” Taking place this Wednesday, the event will feature ten fall/winter 2010 trunk shows happening simultaneously. Among the designers participating: Corduroy faves Shipley & Halmos and Rag & Bone, as well as Alexander Wang, Richard Chai, Vena Cava, Helmut Lang and 3.1 Phillip Lim (photos above). Many of these designers will also be on-hand to show their collections to shoppers personally. In addition to scoping out the new pieces before they hit the store racks, there will also be limited-edition items available for sale.

The event takes place this Wednesday, April 21st on the Co-op floor of Barneys flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York. Drinks, designer appearances, and live music from DJ Beverly Bond between 5-8 pm. Details online at barneys.com.

Shipley & Halmos Get Inspired…

March 30th, 2010

Designer Sam Shipley (of Shipley & Halmos) is giving fans and customers a chance to peek inside his world, with a new website called “Numerous Drawings.” The site features a single sketch by Shipley for each work day, taking inspiration in a found object in the Shipley & Halmos design and office studio. Their studio is filled with vintage film posters, albums, photography, art installations, light fixtures and a host of other meaningful objects that inspire the designers as they prepare their next collection.

Each sketch captures a moment from the design team by offering a personal and extended glimpse into their world. The sketches are all hand-drawn with no Photoshop or erasing, and each post features the original black and white sketch, with an occasional burst of color. It’s a chance to bridge the gap between designer and customer, and a chance to see yet another facet of Shipley’s undeniable artistic and creative talent.

Shipley & Halmos’ “Things That Never Go Out of Style…”

January 24th, 2010

If we had to pick out our perfect capsule wardrobe, chances are, many of the pieces would come from upstart label Shipley & Halmos. Though Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos’ eponymous clothing line officially debuted in 2008, the company was born from a friendship that started almost a decade earlier. After meeting during college, Shipley and Halmos (the designers) founded California-based lifestyle brand Trovata. But the two soon got the itch to start something new and decided to relocate to New York to launch Shipley & Halmos (the label). A year later, they were nominated for the GQ/CFDA Best New Designer Award and also commissioned to design an exclusive women’s collection for Japanese retailer, Uniqlo, that sold out in days. Now they’re busy in the studio, working on their new men’s and women’s looks for fall/winter 2010, to be unveiled next month.

The Shipley & Halmos wardrobe is forward-thinking and current, while maintaining an effortless look and feel. It’s for the guy or girl who wants to look polished, but stand out just enough to make an impression, without going over the top. By focusing on silhouette, line, weight, print, and an interplay of fabrics, Shipley & Halmos’ designs fuse modernity and progression with classic tradition and form. As the designers say themselves, they “endeavor to create a new timelessness.” With that in mind, we asked Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos to take part in our exclusive online series of “Things That Never Go Out of Style.” Here is their top ten list:

1. Charles and Ray Eames
2. New York City
3. Ferraris
4. Beaches (actual sand and ocean, not the gripping Bette Midler film)
5. In-N-Out cheeseburgers
6. The Beatles
7. Parisian women
8. Seinfeld
9. “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens
10. Lists of things that never go out of style

Shipley & Halmos is available in fine boutiques and stores across the world, including Barneys New York, Odin, Ron Herman and Dover Street Market. Find out more about the label at www.shipley-halmos.com.
