Garance Doré + Scott Schuman Seminar

February 15th, 2010

Fashion bloggers-turned-super couple Scott Schuman and Garance Doré are in town this week for New York Fashion Week but they’re not just here to cover the shows and streeters. The two are teaming up for a joint seminar this Wednesday focused on social media in fashion.

Schuman, a veteran of sales and marketing for high fashion designers, is now better known as The Sartorialist, and runs a popular fashion blog. Doré, meantime, is an illustrator and photographer who’s also gained a loyal readership for her Paris-based blog. The couple will share their insights into how social media will change the fashion industry — a topic that might not even have been relevant as little as five years ago! The seminar takes place at Tribeca Skyline Studios Wednesday night from 7-8 pm, followed by a one hour cocktail reception. Space is limited and tickets may be purchased online HERE. SartoriaLUST Pop-Up Shop

September 22nd, 2009

To celebrate the launch of his new book, fashion blogger and street-style photographer Scott Schuman (a.k.a. The Sartorialist) is setting up shop in New York and London, with a new pop-up appropriately titled “SartoriaLUST.” The retail space — at Barneys New York and Liberty of London — has been specially curated by Schuman to showcase all the “sartorial” things that he appreciates, uses and lusts after.

Clothing brands represented include cozy tees and heavy shirts from Schuman-approved favorites like Ralph Lauren, Jil Sander and Marc Jacobs, along with special menswear pieces from newer labels like Duckie Brown. The only leather goods line showcased at the deftly-compiled shop is WANT: Les Essentiels de la Vie — a line of covet-worthy leather bags, luxurious totes and classic accessories based out of Montreal. For the pop-up shop, WANT created a limited-edition, custom-made SartoriaLUST line, with the color, shape and size of each piece in the collection hand-chosen by Schuman himself. The pieces range from a sleek leather portfolio case to a classic black leather camera bag, perfect for Schuman and aspiring photographers and bloggers alike. All the pieces are stamped with the gold SartoriaLUST logo to ensure their collectors-worthy status. Want to check out the full line? Stop by the pop-up shop at Barneys or visit www.wantessentiels.com. The event runs until September 29th.

The Sartorialist Reveals His Influences…

September 2nd, 2009

We admit to being huge fans of Scott Schuman (a.k.a. The Sartorialist), and make sure to check his street-style blog daily. If you flip through other blogs and magazines — or even take a walk down the street in New York and Toronto — it’s clear how many other people have been influenced by his portraits — and choices of who to photograph. Schuman’s idea of what makes someone “cool” and what makes for good fashion and good design have become guideposts for photographers, stylists and everyday fashion lovers alike. Now we get a chance to hear about some of the people — and books — that have influenced his own career, and personal style.

Schuman’s latest blog is titled “Influencers.” The people on his list: August Sander (book shown above), Steve McCurry, Arthur Elgort and Bruce Weber (whose pre-Abercrombie work is cited by Schuman for his “personal character studies”). The word that comes up most often in Schuman’s explanation of his influences: “dignity,” as he writes about “the quiet dignity of the everyday people in Sander’s images” and the “connection that you feel with his subjects.” Schuman also talks about how each of these photographers were able to let the subject fill the space with his or her own story, as opposed to imposing the photographer’s vision into the frame. It’s clear he’s learned a few things from his personal heroes. Read Scott Schuman’s full blog HERE.

The Sartorialist in Toronto

July 20th, 2009

Start digging through your closets for your most photo-worthy outfits… Fashion blogger and editor Scott Schuman, better known as The Sartorialist, is heading up north this week for an appearance at department store Holt Renfrew. As part of their new tribute series on fashion bloggers, the store has made-over its street-level window displays in honor of Schuman, Sea of Shoes blogger Jane Aldridge, Jak and Jill’s Tommy Ton (who photographed us for a feature in the Toronto Star last year); Filipino-blogger and Marc Jacobs muse Bryan Boy, and Corduroy-fave Garance Dore, who’s profiled in the latest issue of our magazine.

Schuman will make an in-store appearance this Wednesday, from 12:30-2 pm, to celebrate his window display and an in-store exhibition of his photography. Details at holtrenfrew.com. No word on whether or not he’s bringing along his camera to capture some of Toronto’s street style scene.. We’d tell you to dress to impress just in case, but you probably already knew that…
