Fashion’s Night Out Version 2.0

August 27th, 2010

Fashion’s Night Out have hit us with an ostensibly unfashionable “PSA” featuring some of the world’s top models. But maybe that’s the point. Unlike the rest of New York Fashion Week — which panders to the industry’s elite — FNO is for the casual fashionista; at least that’s what a series of decidedly un-glam, grinning supermodels will have us think. The above trailer features 14 of the industry’s top models directed by world-renowned photographer Peter Lindbergh, in an effort to drum up hype and support for the now annual shopping event.

See a sampling of the night’s festivities, including in-store appearances from the Olsens, Alexander Wang and Janelle Monae, after the jump…

A Beautiful Film by Rodarte and Todd Cole

March 3rd, 2010

Design darlings Rodarte and visual artist/photographer Todd Cole have teamed up for “Aanteni” — a high-fashion technofilm highlighting Rodarte’s spring/summer 2010 collection. “Aanteni,” which means “nowness,” stars model Guinevere van Seenus as she runs around the deserted grounds of a space lab in Hawthorne, California. The Rodarte sisters say the film was inspired by the pioneering spirit of the space race, which also inspired their latest collection of futuristic crochet knits, leather bandage dresses and distressed plaid.

The film is scored with an eerie soundtrack courtesy of LA-based experimental noisemakers, No Age. And even though the “plot” had has scratching our heads at times, the sheer scale and finale of this beautifully-shot clip will have you not only believing in Rodarte’s vision, but also in the wondrous possibilities of fashion, film and the future.

Alexander Wang and Rodarte Latest To Stream Shows Live Online

February 9th, 2010

In the latest of many moves to stream fashion shows online this season, photographer Nick Knight has announced that he is collaborating with designers Alexander Wang and Rodarte by digitally presenting their collections on his website, SHOWstudio.com next week. Alexander Wang’s show will be presented on February 13th at 5:00 PM EST and Rodarte on February 16th at 12:00 PM EST.

Wang and Rodarte’s shows are two of the most exclusive during New York Fashion Week and entry is granted to only a select few. But this year, both the fashion shows will be streamed live on SHOWstudio.com and viewable after the presentations, continuing an increasing trend which sees more and more designers digitally capturing their fashion shows and presenting them either live online, or as film vignettes. Recently, even established fashion houses like Alexander McQueen, Burberry and Armani announced plans to stream their shows online, opening up both criticism from fashion show purists and kudos from mainstream media and bloggers. What do YOU think about the move online? Does it take away from the excitement of the shows, or does it help the brand build buzz? And how will it affect potential buyers? After all, the painstaking details that go into a garment might not be visible from a computer screen. Will it affect the public’s perception of the collection? Let us know what you think in the comment section below…

Target Pop-Up Shops

December 2nd, 2009

The downside to living in New York — and there are just a few — is that we can never make it to a Target store whenever they launch they latest designer collaborations. Sure, there’s one in downtown Brooklyn and even one out in The Bronx, but for most Manhattanites, the location of those stores are almost as foreign as those parts of the city themselves.

Thankfully, Target is launching a handful of small pop-up shops in major cities across the country next week — just in time for the holiday shopping season too. They’re calling it “Target to Go” and the shops work more like fast-food counter than a traditional boutique. Customers “order” their selections by number at one counter and then pick them up at another counter, bagged and ready to go. Still, it’s no small potatoes: the Rodarte for Target collection will be among some of the items featured for sale (a week before the collection hits physical stores!), as well as selection of holiday gift items hand-selected especially for the occasion.

Ready to place your orders? Here are the locations of the “Target to Go” pop-ups:

New York: Meatpacking District, Gansevoort Street & Washington
Washington D.C.: Georgetown, M Street & Wisconsin Avenue
San Francisco: 5th Street between Market & Mission

All of the pop-ups are open from December 11th through the 13th from 10am to 8pm. Details at target.com.
