Rag & Bone Makes Beautiful Shoes For Guys (and Girls)

April 21st, 2010

You know those girls that just seem to have it all together? Their hair, although they would probably detest it, is always perfect. Their locks blow backwards as they speed by on their vintage bike. They’re the type of girl who loves cooking and picnics and reading and long walks in the park with their dog that looks just like them. Their whole image is further strengthened by their carefully-selected outfits, which usually include simple pieces like jeans and a tee. However, it is their attention to detail that puts them above the rest. Asymmetrical cuts, luscious fabrics or a fantastic pair of shoes usually does the trick for these gals, which is why Rag & Bone’s new Fall 2010 shoe collection, might just be their perfect fit…no pun intended.

The quirk: these shoes are actually designed for men, though it wouldn’t stop these fashion-forward females from donning a pair or two. The trick is in the classic shape and simple styling of the shoes. Rag & Bone has taken their characteristic tailored look and united it with everyone’s friend, functionality. The footwear was inspired by mountaineers’ outfits, which included heavy wool tweeds and quilted cotton. The collection is comprised of three categories: dress shoes, sneakers and hand-crafted welt and wedge shoes, making the series a well-rounded contemporary footwear line. The two-tone brogues feature a mix of English waxed suede and Italian vegetable leather — beautiful. They are perfect for fall excursions and nights out at the pub… or for the aforementioned girl to just waltz into a room with, sure to capture everyone’s attention. Visit your local Rag & Bone retailer to view the collection or check out their website www.rag-bone.com for more details.

Barneys Hosts First-Ever “Trunk-a-Palooza”

April 18th, 2010

It turns out trunk shows aren’t just reserved for ladies who lunch anymore. Barneys New York is giving everyday fashion fans a chance to get first dibs on the fall collections, with a one-day trunk show event dubbed “Trunk-a-Palooza.” Taking place this Wednesday, the event will feature ten fall/winter 2010 trunk shows happening simultaneously. Among the designers participating: Corduroy faves Shipley & Halmos and Rag & Bone, as well as Alexander Wang, Richard Chai, Vena Cava, Helmut Lang and 3.1 Phillip Lim (photos above). Many of these designers will also be on-hand to show their collections to shoppers personally. In addition to scoping out the new pieces before they hit the store racks, there will also be limited-edition items available for sale.

The event takes place this Wednesday, April 21st on the Co-op floor of Barneys flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York. Drinks, designer appearances, and live music from DJ Beverly Bond between 5-8 pm. Details online at barneys.com.

Rag & Bone Asiri Blanket

January 4th, 2010

So it’s been blizzard-ing in New York and it was below zero this weekend here in Toronto and frankly, all I want to do is curl up on my couch and wish the cold weather away. And I’ve found the perfect blanket to do it under. We first spotted this Rag & Bone Asiri blanket during the label’s press preview in the fall and it’s been on our wishlist ever since. The waffle knit blanket measures 47″ x 88″ and comes in a cozy wool or cashmere. As a bonus, it rolls easily into a sturdy leather holster, perfect for taking the blanket with you…though why you’ll want to leave the couch is a mystery to me. The Rag & Bone Asiri blanket is available in navy or cream and retails for $495 (U.S.) at Barneys and select boutiques.

2009 Year in Review: 5 Pop-Up Shops That Caught Our Eye

December 1st, 2009

Uncertain times call for uncertain measures. And really, what’s more uncertain than a temporary retail space erected out of thin air? That is in essence, the pop-up shop — a new way for designers and retailers to showcase their products to the battleworn consumer. Since the economic meltdown, pop-up shops have emerged as an international phenomenon, a way for retailers to promote themselves without having to commit to extended leases while creating unique and interactive spaces for the public. If this is the future of retail, then the future is now. Here are five pop-up shops that caught our eye in 2009:

Where The Wild Things Are Pop-Up Shop @ Space 15 Twenty

As a lead up to the film’s fall release, this shop opened in L.A and sold all things WTWTA, including t-shirts featuring illustrations by Geoff McFetridege, drawings, books, toys and stuffed animals. Even the film’s star Max Records could be seen running through the shop’s cinemtatic landscape, feeling right at home, naturally.

Poketo Pop-Up Shop @ Royal/T

This summer our good friends at Poketo launched their whimsical pop-up shop at L.A.’s Royal/T. Guests were treated to a storewide sale of 25% off on all Poketo items, while the first 50 received a free gift bag. Artmaking workshops with James Gulliver Hancock and APAK were highlights and proof that with some innovation, these things can extend beyond mere consumerism.

Reference Library x Apartamento Magazine: Everyday Life Objects Pop-Up Shop @ Milan Design Week

This collaboration between popular design blog, Reference Library, and the creative folks at Apartamento Magazine yielded the perfect amuse bouche to Milan Design Week; an ecclectic mix of nics and nacs including hot air balloons in candy colors by Bertjan Pot, and designs by the NYC studio Rich, Brilliant, Willing and clothing by New York-favourite Slow and Steady Wins The Race. The true spirit of a pop-up shop, embodied.

Save Fashion Pop-up Shop @ NYC Port Authority

Sponsored and curated by Refinery29, the Save Fashion pop-up shop in May had no problems with traffic, even located in the always bustling Port Authority Bus Terminal in the heart of Manhattan. The impressive lineup was heavy on the indie and heavier on the discounts, while featuring labels like Alex + Chloe, BBlessing, Rag & Bone, and Corduroy friends Steven Alan, and Charlotte Ronson. After a successful fall run in SoHo, Save Fashion is on its way to becoming a New York institution.

Phaidon Pop-Up Shop @ 100 Wooster

The only one on this list that’s still open, this 2,5000 square-foot space is filled with Phaidon’s famous Wallpaper* City Guides and cookbooks, award-winning children’s books and stationery, and collector’s editions on Nobuyoshi Araki, Nan Goldin, Martin Parr and Luc Tuymans to name a few.

Anna Wintour in Queens (for Fashion’s Night Out)

August 17th, 2009

We never thought we’d see the day when Vogue editrix Anna Wintour would set foot in a mall, let alone a mall in Queens. But for one night only, you and hundreds (okay dozens) of other Vogue fans and curious fashionistas alike will have a chance to not only meet Wintour, but get her autograph (and nods of outfit disapproval) as she hosts a signing with designer Michael Kors at the Queens Center Mall Macy’s. It’s all part of “Fashion’s Night Out” — a global event designed to promote fashion and retail in major cities across the world. In New York, more than 700 shops and boutiques will be keeping its doors open late on September 10th, with special appearances, giveaways and events designed just for the occasion.

Barneys flagship store on Madison Avenue and 61st Street will be transformed into a street fair of sorts, with appearances by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (promoting their new collection for “The Row”), as well as Marcus Wainwright and David Neville from Rag & Bone, Thom Browne, Narcisco Rodriguez and others. Stella McCartney and Armani are serving up cocktails and special discounts, there’s live music at Bloomingdale’s, karaoke at Kiehl’s and Opening Ceremony is hosting a “garage sale,” with Rodarte, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler and Band of Outsiders selling goods made exclusively for the event, out of the back of custom cars. It’s the one time you can safely buy a signature Alex Wang handbag from the back of a dark van in Chinatown without feeling cheap and seriously illegal.

The entire list of participating designers and stores can be found HERE. In the meantime, we’ve already started planning our itinerary for the night. We’re thinking of starting out with a drink or two at Maison Martin Margiela and OAK, before heading over to Opening Ceremony for some shopping, a stop at Prada’s visual art exhibition and then winding down with a party at Pat Field’s. What are YOU most looking forward to? And who thinks fashion should have more than just one night out?
