VIDEO: Scott Campbell for Louis Vuitton

December 2nd, 2010

When I interviewed Brooklyn-based tattoo artist Scott Campbell a couple years ago for another magazine (meaning like, a different magazine than Corduroy, not like, Another Magazine), he was freshly mourning the death of his good friend (and client) Heath Ledger and speaking somewhat fatalistically about his future in the tattoo world. Having seen his stock rise thanks to his famous clients (among them Ledger and designer Marc Jacobs), Campbell was busier than ever and yet feeling a bit of a creative lull, when it came time to projects he was passionate about. The kid who grew up obsessed with punk rock and comic books was now filling his day with appointment after appointment but with no real color or creative energy. How quickly things change…

Louis Vuitton’s 100 Legendary Trunks

September 28th, 2010

True aficionados of luxury brand Louis Vuitton know that it’s not the company’s famous handbags that are worth coveting, but rather their monogramed trunks. Now, a new book takes a look at the histor of the artisanl trunkmaker, profiling 100 of the most extraordinary trunks in the company’s history.

Prefaced by Patrick-Louis Vuitton (the great grandson of the company’s founder), “Louis Vuitton: 100 Legendary Trunks” showcases these beautiful creations of the House through more than 800 photographs. Among the pieces on view: the trunk-bed, steamer trunk, tea case, a vintage toiletry kit, circus trunk, library trunk, and even a delicate caviar box. The trunks are featured in gorgeous full-color spreads, paired with the behind-the-scenes stories of their creation. From the first domed trunks to the most modern designs — still produced in the workshops of Asnières (which recently marked 150 years in business) and available for sale today — the spirit of the House of Louis Vuitton is wonderfully detailed in the hardcover, display-worthy tome.

The deluxe edition of the book comes with a hard slipcase a with monogram canvas, reintepreted from the 1896 original pattern and with hotel label stickers. In addition to the book, a special set of postcards have been created from the Louis Vuitton collection, sold with labels ready for mailing (or in our case, collecting).

“Louis Vuitton: 100 Legendary Trunks” retails for $190. The Hotel Labels Postcards Box (30 postcards/30 labels) retails for $75. Both will be available in stores in November.

Behind the Scenes: Louis Vuitton Fall 2010 Campaign

July 5th, 2010

Marc Jacobs has been doing a lot of things right recently over at Louis Vuitton. We adored his casting of Victoria’s Secret supes Karolina Kurkova and Adriana Lima, as well as veterans Laetitia Casta and Elle Macpherson for LV’s recent show in Paris (how completely nostalgic and “right now” at the same time!). And this month, the company unveils their new ad campaign for Fall 2010, featuring models Christy Turlington, Karen Elson and Natalia Vodianova. The goal of the campaign, according to Jacobs, is to represent the diversity of the luxury brand, as interpreted by three women of different ages, looks and styles. Jacobs himself appears in this YouTube teaser (released today), giving us a behind-the-scenes look at the new campaign, and talking about how the garments, the models and the photographs all came together. Louis Vuitton Unveils World Cup Trophy Case

June 2nd, 2010

When the FIFA World Cup Trophy passed through these parts recently, it was placed in a bulletproof glass case, accompanied by a three-man security team and shielded from onlookers with a thick black cloth. While we thought the attention paid to the trophy was a little much then, imagine our (delighted) surprise this morning when we heard about the trophy’s exclusive travel case, created by Louis Vuitton.

Commissioned for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, which kicks off on June 11, the special order case was handmade by a single master craftsman in Louis Vuitton’s historic Asnières workshop near Paris, and it has been meticulously designed to accommodate the much-celebrated and distinguished Trophy.

Made of solid 18-carat gold with a base of semi-precious malachite, the case is covered in Louis Vuitton’s iconic monogram canvas, and fitted with the company’s signature brass lock and corners. The case itself, is tough and sturdy, weighing more than six kilos. It’s a once in a lifetime piece for one of the most recognizable and sought-after trophies in the world. Expect to see the case when the winning country is presented with the trophy at the end of the tournament. And with more than 500 million people expected to watch or take part in the FIFA World Cup this year (whether in South Africa or at home watching on the television), you can be sure that a lot of other people will be seeing the Louis Vuitton case as well.
