Henrik Vibskov Wins Danish Arts Foundation Award

August 19th, 2009

The Danish Arts Foundation announced today that it was awarding designer Henrik Vibskov with 50.000 dkk (just under 10-thousand USD) for his “Solar Donkey Experiment Show,” which took place during Copenhagen Fashion Week earlier this month. Vibskov is known for his inventive designs, which are matched only by their equally-elaborate (and “out there”) runway shows. Need proof: this year’s presentation featured models with faces covered in blond manes galloping down a grassy, tree-lined, “natural” stage. And while other designers at Copenhagen Fashion Week debuted their collection at exclusive, “invite-only” shows, Vibskov took over the public space at Søndermarken, where he presented his latest collection to editors mixed with random beer-drinking spectators, and well, anyone else who showed up.

In awarding the prize today, the Danish Arts Foundation hailed Vibskov’s creative vision and remarked on the coherence between the collection and the show. The Foundation noted that “There was clothing that bordered on costume, but without compromising it’s wearability. In every possible way [this was] a complete youthful and untamed collection for both men and women.” They added that “The vibe was more campfire than fashion which was very appropriate. The event was an informal, curious and uplifting moment in Danish fashion when it is at its most compelling.”

Henrik Vibskov at the Roskilde Festival

July 15th, 2009

When Danish electronic trip-pop group Trentemøller needed a set designed for their headlining gig at the Roskilde festival last week, they knew exactly who to ask. Trentemøller invited fashion designer (and their occasional drummer), Henrik Vibskov to design an elaborate set that featured neon lights, a massive stage, steel beams that jutted from all angles and two massive rotating “eyes” that flickered on and off throughout the night. Think that sounds weird? Well it’s not nearly as strange as Vibskov’s recent show at Paris Fashion Week, from which the set originated. The spring/summer 2010 collection was titled “The Solar Donkey Experiment” and featured models with faces covered in blond wigs chomping down the runway in everything from canvas pantsuits to striped tank-tops and boxers.

What Vibskov lacks in subtlety, he makes up for in impeccable tailoring and design. Critics and buyers alike have sung the praises of the Danish designer for years now and they’re not alone: we’ve got an exclusive interview with Henrik Vibskov in the next issue of Corduroy!

Combat the Cold in Style

February 7th, 2009

So it’s 30 degrees and miserable here in New York, with snow alternating with rain, and slush puddles spilling over the sidewalks. It’s windy and chilly and frankly, we’re all better off indoors planning a quick warm weather getaway. But if you must step outside, here are five things we’ve come to love over the past few weeks, that will help you fight the frostbite and look good while doing it.

1. Henrik Vibskov scarf

We’ve been eyeing these wool and silk scarves by Denmark-native Vibskov for weeks now and we think we finally have an excuse to buy it with the cold temperatures outside. The scarves feature Vibskov’s unique colorblock patterns and weaving, with fringing on all sides. Available at retailers like Scout (L.A.) and Seven (New York) and online at the Henrik Vibskov “V-Store.”

2. Phillip Lim 3.1 Grey Border Sweater

We found this boxy heather-grey sweater at Barney’s last month and it’s quickly become our new favorite item in our closet. Knit in a soft wool/cotton/cashmere blend, it features an extra-wide neck and is cropped at the bottom, allowing you to wear it slightly sloppy on its own, or as a layering piece over a shirt and tie. Available at stores like Barney’s and Oak (New York).

3. Uniqlo “HeatTech” tees and tops

Our design director Sula told us about Uniqlo’s new line of “heat-retaining” innerwear months ago, commenting on how toasty and warm she felt in her “HeatTech” t-shirt. The shirts are woven out of a specially-designed hollow fiber that captures and retains warmth, by absorbing moisture and converting it to heat. Milk protein, containing natural amino acids, has been mixed with the fibers to ensure the fabric is smooth and soft to the touch, while a special antibacterial agent takes care of any unpleasant odors. Though the product is just catching on here in the U.S., HeatTech has already become a winter wardrobe essential in Japan, with 20 million units sold last year alone.

4. Organic Bath and Massage Oil from Bella Pella

There’s nothing better to after a blisteringly cold day than a hot soak in the tub. This natural massage oil from Montreal-based Bella Pella (one of our favorite bath and body lines) is made from certified organic soy beans and sunflower seed oil. Natural essential oils from grapefruit, mandarin, geranium and lavender provide a subtle and pleasant scent that will leave you feeling uplifted and relaxed.

5. Maribelle Hot Chocolate

Our favorite cup of hot chocolate in New York comes from Maribelle’s Cacao Bar in SoHo. Grab a seat in the tiny ornate back room, with vintage chandeliers hanging from the ceilings and old Chaplin movies playing in the background, and order yourself a cup of hot chocolate made from rich, single-origin Colombian cacao. This smoky, perfectly smooth hot chocolate comes in four flavors: Aztec Original (60%), Aztec Dark (70%), Mocha and Spicy. The pastries there aren’t bad either, but who has room after downing a whole mug of cocoa? We’ll take the eclairs to go!
