GIVEAWAY: “HARRY BROWN” ON DVD

August 30th, 2010

Harry Brown, the critically-acclaimed film starring Sir Michael Caine and Emily Mortimer, is being released on DVD tomorrow. And we want to give you a chance to take home a copy for yourself.

The controversial film tells the story of Harry Brown (played by two-time Oscar winner Caine), an ordinary, law-abiding citizen, whose quiet life is in direct contrast to his violent, drug-infested neighborhood. Though he’s suffered his share of tragedies in life, he just wants to quietly move on and live out his retirement in peace. But Brown is soon forced to confront a different side of himself as his best friend is murdered, and he takes it upon himself to find the men responsible.

It’s a fascinating role for Caine, who’s calm demeanor is given a rare jolt of aggression and anger, as his character is soon drawn into a dangerous and soon-hypnotic pattern of justice and revenge. Mortimer (who appeared on the cover of Corduroy Issue 5) plays the inspector who tries to convict the thugs, while simultaneously trying to keep Harry Brown from taking his actions too far.

The film was as an Official Selection at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, and The South by Southwest Film Festival. And we are giving away copies to a few lucky readers.

Find out how to win, and see more photos from the film, after the jump…

Issue 5: Emily Mortimer

May 4th, 2009

We’ve been fans of Emily Mortimer’s ever since we first saw her in Match Point. So we were thrilled when she invited us over to her townhouse in Brooklyn for the cover shoot for Issue 5. Ever the consummate professional, she even had her own hair and makeup done before we got there! We didn’t have to do much though. Emily is incredibly photogenic and was a pleasure to shoot. We got a variety of shots both inside her house and in her backyard, and I think you’ll like the final images we chose. In the meantime, check out some selects below and make sure to visit our gallery for more photoshoot outtakes and behind-the-scenes pics.

Behind the Scenes: Emily Mortimer

January 9th, 2009

Who doesn’t love Emily Mortimer? When we recently sat down and made a list of our favorite movies, we realized that many of them starred Emily. From her lovely turn in Match Point, to her brief vignette in Paris, Je T’Aime, to her under-appreciated (we think) role in Lars and the Real Girl, Emily is the type of actress who can adapt to any script and any setting and manage to be equally enchanting.

We spent a day with Emily this week photographing her for the next issue of Corduroy. Though the weather outside was hardly ideal, the atmosphere inside the studio was incredibly warm and creative. Emily was friendly, down to earth and open to collaborating, which gave us a chance to try some different options on-set (Plus she’s incredibly photogenic!) We pulled some great looks — including a Chloe dress and a Stella McCartney blazer she really liked — and I can’t wait to see the final shots once all the film is developed. After the photoshoot, we headed to a quaint little cafe in DUMBO for the interview, where Emily told us that she’s always excited to see what’s ahead in her career. Having watched her movies — and having spent a day with her — we have to say, we’re pretty excited too.
