Chanel is a Good Sport

December 14th, 2009

Wow. Though Chanel’s new Sports Collection should come as no suprise–since most high end fashion houses have taken to releasing a smattering of unorthodox products as of late–the image of the iconic inverted C’s on a dumbbell is shocking no matter how you spin it. And it doesn’t end there. Chanel’s foray into sports merchandise will see them release among other things, a boomerang, inline skates, guitars, footballs, basketballs, and perhaps the nicest set of golf clubs we ever did see. Though the items themselves are destined to be covered in blood, sweat and tears, Chanel’s simple, elegant design is by no means lacking. (They’re also doing musical instruments too). Consider us impressed.

Corduroy in Montreal…

October 1st, 2009

Wanted to tell you about two beautiful shops we stopped by during our recent visit to Montreal:

1. Librissime is a gorgeous book shop located on Rue Saint-Paul near the outskirts of Old Montreal. Walk through the store’s striking double doors and you’ll enter into a dream library, with wall to ceiling mahogany shelves stocked with old tomes, photo anthologies and religious and historical literature in more than a dozen languages and just as many editions.

With a focus on rare and special-edition books (and accessories), Librissime is where the avid collector can find personally-signed editions by Chanel or Valentino, Massaï bookends, vintage crates and even a $4000 saddle-stitched white leather bookcase made by Coach. For the average reader, there’s also a fine selection of pocket books and comics, though we found ourselves enthralled by the neatly-arrange rows of Assouline art and photography books, featuring such iconic names as Serge Lutens, Helmut Newton and Peter Lindbergh. If you can’t check out the store in Montreal, don’t worry. The owners are preparing to open a second location in the Meatpacking District in New York this fall. Details at www.librissime.com.

2. Boutique Reborn is quickly becoming a top destination for trend-setters and fashion-minded folk in and around Montreal, with its carefully-curated selection of Canadian designers and hard-to-find international labels.

The clothing, like the store, is sleek and simple, yet unquestionably stylish. Savvy shoppers will appreciate the appearance of local designers, like Complex Geometries’ line of architectural tees and tanks, as well as old favorites like Acne and the house line from Opening Ceremony. We loved combing through their selection of Alexander Wang tees and dresses for women and their rack devoted to Rad Hourani’s new offerings for men (Hourani has been quoted as saying that storeowner Brigitte Chartrand is his “muse”). Indeed, Chartrand is one of those impossibly stylish women, whose eye for fashion is matched only by her pride in the tiny store. In many ways, it’s as if Chartrand has opened up her personal closet to visitors, inviting them in to browse and pick out favorite pieces from her collections. We know we’ll be shopping in Chartrand’s “closet” over and over again. Details about all the designers they carry and online shopping at reborn.ws.

Audrey Tautou Chanel No. 5 Ad

May 5th, 2009

Can’t will till the summer to catch Audrey Tautou as legendary French designer Coco Chanel? The trailer for the “Coco Avant Chanel” movie came out weeks ago, but today we have the official Chanel No. 5 perfume ad, that may or may not accompany the film. The ad (which comes in a 30 second version and an extended version posted below) reunites Tautou with Amélie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, in a moving account about the brief passions that ignite between a man and a woman who brush past each other on the train. The commercial was filmed in a railway station in Nice and was inspired by a scene in the Oscar-nominated film A Very Long Engagement. As with the film trailer, we love how the music and scenery perfectly underscore Tautou’s expressiveness and delicate acting, all of which breathe new life into the iconic fragrance and help us fall in love with the magic of Chanel No. 5 all over again.

Hermès Art Pod to Land in L.A.

April 9th, 2009

New York had the Chanel installation in Central Park over the fall, and now L.A. will get its own fashion-art hybrid courtesy of Hermès. The brand’s futuristic “H-Box” makes its U.S. debut this weekend at the Orange County Museum of Art. Designed by Portuguese architect Didier Fiuza Faustino, the “H-Box” is like a futuristic capsule, opening up to feature the work of eight emerging video artists from around the world. Think of it as a mobile art museum-slash-personal cinema for the 21st century. The Hermès pod has been travelling around the world since 2007, when it debuted at Paris’ Centre Pompidou. The “H-Box” will remain in the O.C. until September. No word yet on whether there will be any other U.S. stops.

Coco Avant Chanel Trailer

March 9th, 2009

The trailer for the new Coco Chanel biopic is finally out and the film looks exactly as you would imagine: full of grand, sweeping images of the Parisian countryside, elegant, iconic Chanel costumes and a lush orchestral score that builds to a beautiful climax. The trailer also provides a first glimpse into Audrey Tautou’s portrayal of the legendary fashion designer, and we have to say, we’ve certainly missed seeing her on screen. The film opens this Spring, but you can get a first look at the trailer here:
