Chanel Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Show

October 7th, 2010

This is pretty incredible.

Karl Lagerfeld is known for his elaborate and grandiose fashion shows for Chanel, always presented on the biggest stages, and never failing to surprise — or inspire. But the presentation in Paris this week for his spring/summer 2011 collection, had something else that we haven’t seen or felt from Chanel shows in recent memory: a heart. Whether it was the full-piece orchestra on stage, the return of former house muse Inès de la Fressange, or the endearing image of Brad Kroenig walking out with his son, the show had a welcome warmth that stood in contrast to Lagerfeld’s often chilly displays (In fact, the fall/winter 2010 collection was literally shown on an iceberg).

We loved seeing Inès and Brad and (one of our faves) Stella Tennant take to the runway for Chanel, and it goes without saying that the clothes were just as beautiful and breathtaking as the presentation. We were as mesmerized by the delicate details in the skirts and jackets as we were by the tightly choreographed show! Check out a clip from the show below and a clip of the big finale, after the jump…

Fashion’s Night Out Version 2.0

August 27th, 2010

Fashion’s Night Out have hit us with an ostensibly unfashionable “PSA” featuring some of the world’s top models. But maybe that’s the point. Unlike the rest of New York Fashion Week — which panders to the industry’s elite — FNO is for the casual fashionista; at least that’s what a series of decidedly un-glam, grinning supermodels will have us think. The above trailer features 14 of the industry’s top models directed by world-renowned photographer Peter Lindbergh, in an effort to drum up hype and support for the now annual shopping event.

See a sampling of the night’s festivities, including in-store appearances from the Olsens, Alexander Wang and Janelle Monae, after the jump…

The Ballad of Coco & Igor

June 13th, 2010

Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky are both icons in their own right; Chanel for her democratization of women’s fashion, and Stravinsky for pushing the boundaries of rhythmic and harmonic structure in 20th century music. But while the two are well-respected and well-known for their individual accomplishments, a new film seeks to trace their less-known work and time together.

Coco & Igor follows the often tempestuous relationship between the ‘couturiere’ and the composer, exploring the period between the first performance of Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring,” to the worldwide launch of Coco’s celebrated perfume, Chanel No. 5.

After premiering at Cannes last year, and receiving a limited theatrical run in Europe, the film finally gets its full release in the U.S. this week. Its release in close proximity to the film, Coco Avant Chanel will undoubtedly invite comparisons. But while that film focused on the designer’s fierce and often-alienating independence, Coco & Igor explores her passion and intimacy in her work, set off in part no doubt, by her torrid affair and exchange of ideas with the Russian composer.

Coco & Igorl is in theaters now. Check out a trailer below:

Karl Lagerfeld Unveils Trailer for Short Film

May 10th, 2010

Designer Karl Lagerfeld stepped behind the camera recently to helm a short film to promote his Chanel Cruise 2011 presentation, which takes place before an exclusive crowd tomorrow in Saint-Tropez. Today, we get a sneak peek at the film, with the release of a short trailer. The film is titled “Remember Now,” and the trailer depicts models getting ready for a night out on the town.

Lagerfeld assembled some of her favorite models for the clip, including Freja Beha Erichsen, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Victoria’s Secret angel Karolina Kurkova and the omnipresent (at least when it comes to Karl) Baptiste Giabiconi. Digging the soundtrack you hear? The tunes are courtesy of Misshapes member-turned-model, Leigh Lezark. Check out the trailer to “Remember Now” below:

DecadesTwo Pop-Up in New York

March 18th, 2010

If you’re not familiar with DecadesTwo, consider this your primer. An internationally-renowned retail/consignment shop based out of L.A., DecadesTwo is a prime destination for thrifty fashionistas hoping to score some pre-loved Hollywood looks. Co-owner Christos Garkinos scours the closets of celebrities and socialites to pull semi-exclusive pieces for the store, which carries both vintage labels as well as current, of-the-moment designers.

This weekend, the store comes to New York, with Kiki DeMontparnasse hosting the DecadesTwo pop-up shop at its SoHo locatioin. At a press preview last night, eager buyers hovered around a table full of Louboutins and Manolo Blahniks (every pair of shoes in the store will sell for $150 on the last day), while others went through racks of classic Chanel tweed and wool jackets, Philip Lim shift dresses, Rick Owens tees, and a stocked shelf full of jewelry, bags and accessories. There is also a specially-curated section for pieces by the late Alexander McQueen.

The shop will be replenished with new merchandise every day and, reportedly, a truck full of four hundred shoes will arrive Sunday afternoon. In other words, expect a line-up.

The DecadesTwo pop-up at Kiki de Montaparnasse is located at 79 Greene Street in SoHo. The shop is open 11am to 7pm tomorrow and Saturday, and 12pm to 5pm on Sunday. Happy hunting!
