Anna Faris is best known for her comedic work, in films like Scary Movie and The House Bunny, and when we interviewed her for Corduroy during a recent trip to LA, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that the fun-loving girl on film is just as outgoing and effervescent in real life.

Our shoot took place at the brand new W Hollywood — located right at the intersection of Hollywood and Vine, though tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the area thanks to some lush landscaping and smart design. And while the location was definitely posh and upscale, Faris was low-key and casual, chatting away with us like a friend we’ve known for years.

She came to the shoot fresh off a much-needed vacation with her family in Hawaii, and looked tan and well-rested in a worn-in T-shirt and jeans. Though she works in an often superficial and hyper image-aware industry, Faris seems comfortable in her own skin — and as a result, in her career choices thus far. We spoke a lot about Faris’ status as “that funny girl” in Hollywood and we think you’ll be surprised at what she had to say. We also found out about Faris’ life outside of work, which these days, consists mostly of spending time with her new husband (actor Chris Pratt), cooking her secret recipe for baked chicken, and not-so-secretly rocking out to her favorite band, Phoenix. Make sure to pick up Issue 8 of Corduroy to see all the photos and read the full interview (chicken recipe included!) with Anna Faris. The issue hits stores this month!

We photographed the beautiful and talented Julia Ormond during our trip to L.A. last month. Ormond, perhaps best known for her roles in films like Legends of the Fall and Sabrina, was in a celebratory mood when we saw her, after recently winning an Emmy Award for her supporting role in the HBO movie Temple Grandin. The joy and her passion for performance was evident throughout the photoshoot, as she effortlessly segued from one gorgeous look (and one gorgeous outfit) to the next.

But as we found out during our time with Ormond, there is a lot more to her than just acting. She’s a dedicated mother, and also a tireless activist, who has been working to bring awareness to the issue of human trafficking and slavery for more than a decade. In fact, her celebratory mood was on view again a few days later as she presided over the signing of the “California Transparency in Supply Chains Act” — a bill that forces companies to post online their policies for ensuring their supply chains are free from slavery and human trafficking.

Ormond may be best known for her film and television appearances, but it’s a project like this that makes us really appreciate — and truly celebrate — the tremendous work that she is doing.

Make sure to pick up Issue 8 of Corduroy, coming soon, to see the complete set of photos from our shoot and to read our interview with Julia Ormond.

Like most of the Western world, we woke up this morning eager to see the much balleyhooed Oscar nominations, announced earlier today. As everyone predicted, Avatar and The Hurt Locker lead the field with nine nods a piece while sleeper hits The Blind Side and District 9 crept in to earn surprising Best Picture nods. Everything else seems to be just where the three million prediction lists we saw this week said they’d be, though we can’t say we weren’t a little disappointed that our friend Ben Foster didn’t get nominated for his gripping performance in The Messenger. Though his co-star Woody Harrelson earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination, Foster’s performance as a casualty notification officer was the film’s emotional core, and should have been recognized by the Academy. We spoke with Foster last fall and he was obviously excited about his work in the film, but after reading the piece in our upcoming issue, you’ll see that the last thing Ben Foster does this for is awards. Here’s a little sneak peek from our photoshoot with the actor. And make sure to pick up our spring issue of Corduroy to see all the photos and to read our brand new interview with Ben Foster.
