Fashion’s Night Out have hit us with an ostensibly unfashionable “PSA” featuring some of the world’s top models. But maybe that’s the point. Unlike the rest of New York Fashion Week — which panders to the industry’s elite — FNO is for the casual fashionista; at least that’s what a series of decidedly un-glam, grinning supermodels will have us think. The above trailer features 14 of the industry’s top models directed by world-renowned photographer Peter Lindbergh, in an effort to drum up hype and support for the now annual shopping event.
See a sampling of the night’s festivities, including in-store appearances from the Olsens, Alexander Wang and Janelle Monae, after the jump…

It turns out trunk shows aren’t just reserved for ladies who lunch anymore. Barneys New York is giving everyday fashion fans a chance to get first dibs on the fall collections, with a one-day trunk show event dubbed “Trunk-a-Palooza.” Taking place this Wednesday, the event will feature ten fall/winter 2010 trunk shows happening simultaneously. Among the designers participating: Corduroy faves Shipley & Halmos and Rag & Bone, as well as Alexander Wang, Richard Chai, Vena Cava, Helmut Lang and 3.1 Phillip Lim (photos above). Many of these designers will also be on-hand to show their collections to shoppers personally. In addition to scoping out the new pieces before they hit the store racks, there will also be limited-edition items available for sale.
The event takes place this Wednesday, April 21st on the Co-op floor of Barneys flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York. Drinks, designer appearances, and live music from DJ Beverly Bond between 5-8 pm. Details online at barneys.com.

In the latest of many moves to stream fashion shows online this season, photographer Nick Knight has announced that he is collaborating with designers Alexander Wang and Rodarte by digitally presenting their collections on his website, SHOWstudio.com next week. Alexander Wang’s show will be presented on February 13th at 5:00 PM EST and Rodarte on February 16th at 12:00 PM EST.
Wang and Rodarte’s shows are two of the most exclusive during New York Fashion Week and entry is granted to only a select few. But this year, both the fashion shows will be streamed live on SHOWstudio.com and viewable after the presentations, continuing an increasing trend which sees more and more designers digitally capturing their fashion shows and presenting them either live online, or as film vignettes. Recently, even established fashion houses like Alexander McQueen, Burberry and Armani announced plans to stream their shows online, opening up both criticism from fashion show purists and kudos from mainstream media and bloggers. What do YOU think about the move online? Does it take away from the excitement of the shows, or does it help the brand build buzz? And how will it affect potential buyers? After all, the painstaking details that go into a garment might not be visible from a computer screen. Will it affect the public’s perception of the collection? Let us know what you think in the comment section below…

Opening Ceremony — the New York-based purveyor of all things covetable and cool — is taking its unique retail concept across the globe. The store is opening a location in the hip Shibuya area of Tokyo later this month. The new store moves away from the traditional racks of clothing method of display in favor of a “mini mall” concept first introduced at its L.A. location. A pantheon of designers have been invited to exhibit their wares inside a custom-designed “stall,” including Alexander Wang, Nom de Guerre, Band of Outsiders (and its women’s counterpart BOY), Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony and The Row. The store is also introducing its first restaurant outing, called appropriately, “Potluck at Opening Ceremony.”
Opening Ceremony is celebrating the launch through a series of promotions, including a set of short films, starring Sevigny, Jason Schwartzman and former Corduroy cover girl Jena Malone. Malone’s clip is directed by M Brash and features the telegenic actress prancing around in a golden field while Gus Van Sant sits intently in a chair watching her while also holding another Jena Malone. It’s actually more enjoyable and less pretentious than it sounds. Check out the film HERE and check out artist renderings of the new Opening Ceremony Tokyo below:

We never thought we’d see the day when Vogue editrix Anna Wintour would set foot in a mall, let alone a mall in Queens. But for one night only, you and hundreds (okay dozens) of other Vogue fans and curious fashionistas alike will have a chance to not only meet Wintour, but get her autograph (and nods of outfit disapproval) as she hosts a signing with designer Michael Kors at the Queens Center Mall Macy’s. It’s all part of “Fashion’s Night Out” — a global event designed to promote fashion and retail in major cities across the world. In New York, more than 700 shops and boutiques will be keeping its doors open late on September 10th, with special appearances, giveaways and events designed just for the occasion.
Barneys flagship store on Madison Avenue and 61st Street will be transformed into a street fair of sorts, with appearances by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (promoting their new collection for “The Row”), as well as Marcus Wainwright and David Neville from Rag & Bone, Thom Browne, Narcisco Rodriguez and others. Stella McCartney and Armani are serving up cocktails and special discounts, there’s live music at Bloomingdale’s, karaoke at Kiehl’s and Opening Ceremony is hosting a “garage sale,” with Rodarte, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler and Band of Outsiders selling goods made exclusively for the event, out of the back of custom cars. It’s the one time you can safely buy a signature Alex Wang handbag from the back of a dark van in Chinatown without feeling cheap and seriously illegal.
The entire list of participating designers and stores can be found HERE. In the meantime, we’ve already started planning our itinerary for the night. We’re thinking of starting out with a drink or two at Maison Martin Margiela and OAK, before heading over to Opening Ceremony for some shopping, a stop at Prada’s visual art exhibition and then winding down with a party at Pat Field’s. What are YOU most looking forward to? And who thinks fashion should have more than just one night out?
