When I was attending college in Montreal, I saved up money during the fall semester of my junior year to buy myself a tailored, heather-grey, wool-cashmere winter coat from Mackage. It was soft with subtle details, yet strong and utilitarian, and fit just snug enough to keep me warm while also helping me avoid the oversized (and underdressed) versions of the long coat being sported by my classmates. I visited the store every few weeks to make sure my coat was still in stock (and to see if it had gone on sale) and finally had enough money to purchase it just as the weather was turning brisk in the city. I remember the excitement I felt as I walked to Mackage that October morning to make my first big “grown-up” clothing purchase, and then the utter shock and complete disappointment I felt when I found out my size was now sold out.
Up until recently, Mackage was only available at its store in Montreal or at high-end department stores and boutiques here in New York. But today, Mackage opens its first-ever American freestanding store — for a limited time — in the Meatpacking District. The pop-up shop will only stay up for a month, but it will carry the brand’s full line of luxurious wool coats, trenches, puffy down jackets, and classic leathers for both men and women. I’m planning to check out the selection early, so I don’t miss out on my coveted Mackage winter coat again.
The Mackage pop-up shop is located at 829 Washington Street (near Little West 12th Street). Open seven days a week. Details at mackage.com.
