Weekend Listening: Marié Digby

We first caught wind of Marié Digby after her acoustic rendition of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” took YouTube (and MTV) by storm. A few months later, we photographed and interviewed her for Issue 3 of Corduroy and we’ve since had the pleasure of watching her career take off and grow. This week, Digby released her sophomore disc, “Breathing Underwater” — a collection of acoustic-driven, roll-down-your-window pop/rock stompers. It’s the kind of album you want to put on while unwinding at home, or the kind of album you want to blast from your car speakers while cruising down the PCH. The signature soundtrack songs are there (“Avalanche” and “Feel” are just begging to be featured in a Bullock or Aniston film) but there are also hints of a new musical direction for the California-based Digby, who wraps her angelic voice around percussive dance beats and electronic-tinged production on a few of the tracks. Check out my favorite cut, “Daybreak” below, then head over to Digby’s MySpace to check out more clips, and pick up Issue 3 of Corduroy to find out more about this buzzing young artist.
