We’re not saying “we told you so,” but there’s a little sense of pride we get every time Emily Mortimer’s name is mentioned these days for her work in HBO’s The Newsroom. While Jeff Daniels is the star of the Aaron Sorkin series, Mortimer is, in many ways, the anchor, grounding the drama with her deft mix of realism and emotionality, all while keeping Daniels’ character – and the storyline – in check.
We first met Mortimer three and a half years ago when we featured her on the cover of Corduroy Issue 5. The British-born but New York-based actress invited us into her Brooklyn townhouse for the photo shoot with our creative director Peter Ash Lee and graciously opened up her home to our team. We knew she was generous, but we were also impressed with her sense of humor and how candid and easy-going she was in a room full of strangers.
When it came time to shoot, Mortimer paid careful details to the styling, making sure the clothes would not wear her, but that she would feel comfortable and be able to express herself adequately in the garments. As we started snapping our photos, the actress was calm and focused, taking in the moment from in front of the camera… just as we were taking it all in from behind the lens. It was a wonderful afternoon and Mortimer’s cover is still one of our favorites to this day. It wasn’t hard for us to fall in love with Emily Mortimer – and now millions of new fans are falling in love with her each week as well.
