Where the Wild Things Are “Making Of” Book

We got a beautiful hardcover book in the mail the other day — a “behind the scenes” look at the recent big-screen adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are. If you fell in love with the film as much as we did, you’ll want to pick up this sort-of companion piece.

Titled “Hands On and We Shoot,” the book details the planning and making of the film, from early sketches and storyboards, to backstage photographs and interviews with the talented cast and crew. There are even pages of early drafts of the scripts. Screenplay writers Dave Eggers and Spike Jonze (who also directed the film) contribute forewords, as well as favorite anecdotes taken from the process. One of our favorite pages was a handwritten playlist of songs from Jonze, documenting the tunes played on set to “get the cast and crew all in the same place and mood.”

Among the selections: Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up” and “Rebellion (Lies),” Yeah Yeah Yeah’s “Maps” and The Smiths’ “Cemetry Gates.” Aside from its extensive content and its unique fold-out shape and size, the book adds another layer of depth and dimension to an already-layered film. It’s part art anthology, part scrapbook and part documentary, giving fans of the movie — and fans of movie-making in general — an intimate glimpse into just how the beautiful film came together. “Hands On and We Shoot” is published by Harper Collins and available in most major bookstores and online at Amazon.
