It seemed like just yesterday that we were begging our parents to buy us a Tommy Hilfiger T-shirt to wear on the first day of school. Now it looks like we’ll be begging our girlfriend to buy us a vintage-inspired wool cardigan from the label’s new young and preppy collection, called, simply, “Tommy.”
Launching this Fall, the “Tommy” collection will be sold exclusively in Canada, in a surprising move for the global retailer. But at the “Tommy” press preview last week in Toronto, a PR rep for the company explained that the Canadian launch was an intentional move, designed to help the line better reach and appeal to its “target audience,” while maintaining its exclusivity. Still, the company brought in ELLE style director, Kate Lanphear, and New York-based menswear designer, Victor Glemaud, to help style the models at the launch party, which makes you think they haven’t completely abandoned their American influences just yet.
Check out a few looks from the new collection, after the jump.
The new collection is a reworked take on the All-American classics that Tommy Hilfiger is known for. Think washed tailored jackets and embroidered cardigans for men, and slouchy sweatshirts and preppy skirts for women. The line also includes an eclectic mix of accessories, from hand-painted brogues and motorcycle boots, to casual tote bags and an uptown clutch. And while the majority of pieces feature muted tones for fall, a few bursts of bright color show that this isn’t your dad’s wardrobe anymore. It’s a young, modern and fresh take on a brand that’s hoping to reclaim some of its former glory.
Similar to J Crew’s recent move toward Americana, “Tommy” re-introduces the Hilfiger brand to a whole new generation, while paying homage to its inspired past. It’s a definite step up for the company, both conceptually and aesthetically, and it’s sure to become a popular go-to for Canadians looking to add some strong and quirky pieces to their wardrobe.
“Tommy” will be available in Canada this fall. Prices start at $24 for knits, $79 for denim and $129-139 for men’s and women’s outerwear.
