The Ballad of Coco & Igor

Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky are both icons in their own right; Chanel for her democratization of women’s fashion, and Stravinsky for pushing the boundaries of rhythmic and harmonic structure in 20th century music. But while the two are well-respected and well-known for their individual accomplishments, a new film seeks to trace their less-known work and time together.

Coco & Igor follows the often tempestuous relationship between the ‘couturiere’ and the composer, exploring the period between the first performance of Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring,” to the worldwide launch of Coco’s celebrated perfume, Chanel No. 5.

After premiering at Cannes last year, and receiving a limited theatrical run in Europe, the film finally gets its full release in the U.S. this week. Its release in close proximity to the film, Coco Avant Chanel will undoubtedly invite comparisons. But while that film focused on the designer’s fierce and often-alienating independence, Coco & Igor explores her passion and intimacy in her work, set off in part no doubt, by her torrid affair and exchange of ideas with the Russian composer.

Coco & Igorl is in theaters now. Check out a trailer below:
