When news broke last month that Milton, Ontario-based rockers The Most Serene Republic had been recruited by author Douglas Coupland to soundtrack his new clothing line with Roots, there were more than a few head-scratching fans from both ends of the spectrum. Turns out the collaboration-no-one-saw-coming was a perfect match for everyone involved.

TMSR’s song “Pink Noise” (from their recent digital-only EP “Fantasick Impossibliss”) is the official song for the clothing line, which is called Roots x Douglas Coupland. What’s more, Most Serene Republic keyboardist Ryan Lenssen teamed up with film score composer Terence Gowan to write an original soundtrack for the campaign. Both the music video and campaign teaser will be shown in Roots stores across Canada. It’s something the band says was a no-brainer in terms of exposure. But they also jumped on the chance to work with Coupland, one of their favorite authors both in terms of prose and subject matter. Both TMSR and Coupland say the collaboration is extension of the current artistic movement — a world in which art, words, music and fashion are seamlessly coming together to soundtrack our everyday lives. If an author can design a clothing line and a small Canadian indie band can score the campaign, it proves that art and fashion are truly opening up to anyone and everyone, and the possibilities like they say, are endless.

Check out The Most Serene Republic’s video for “Pink Noise,” interspersed with behind-the-scenes footage of the Roots x Douglas Coupland clothing line below:

New York’s (capsule) fashion trade show kicks off today and to mark the occasion, organizers are launching their first-ever “travel mart,” featuring an exclusive (capsule) collection of travel must-haves designed exclusively for the event.

Five specialty items have been designed by participating show designers, including former J.Press creative director Mark McNairy, UK-based Ally Capellino, Corduroy-fave Jack Spade, and local labels and merchants SHARPS Barber & Shop and Bowery Lane Bicycles. Each item comes tagged with a collectible (capsule) stick pin, and will only be sold at the (capsule) show in New York this week, and online at www.capsuleshow.com and www.oaknyc.com for a limited time.

Our favorite is the Ally Capellino Denim Carry-on Bag (above). This special-edition Alphonse rucksack from the British bag designer comes in a dark-washed denim and is topped off with a leather buckle and a special Ally Capellino x (capsule) branded handle. With plenty of roomy pockets and versatile styling (we’d take it to work or to the cottage), it’s proof that the rucksack is making a comeback.

Also on our list of things to pick up: SHARPS’ handy travel set of no-fuss grooming products, which include shaving essentials, Daily Prep Moisturizing Lotion, shampoo and a full-size “Happy Me All Over Soap Bar” all packaged together in a portable gift (or travel) box (photo at left). It’s a sharp take (no pun intended) on the basic travel and grooming kit.

The (capsule) show takes place today and tomorrow at Center 548 in New York and the (capsule) Travel Mart is now open for business at www.capsuleshow.com and beginning next week atwww.oaknyc.com.

When your new T-shirt comes straight out of a vacuum-sealed package, you know it’s pretty fresh. When it’s made from a buttery-soft cotton and fits your frame just so? Well, that’s even better.

The white T-shirt — a must-have staple in every man’s wardrobe — has just received a breath of fresh air thanks to the aptly-named, LA-based company, “Fresh White Tee.” It’s mission, like its name, is simple: create the best basic white tee a guy will ever own. Well consider it mission accomplished. From the unique packaging (guaranteed to retain freshness) to the high quality, 100% cotton, these custom-tailored tees fit everyone’s style and personality, whether you’re layering it under a suit jacket for the office, or wearing it with frayed denim shorts to the beach. This isn’t your average gym workout tee! It’s strong and durable and the company also went through more than a hundred prototypes before settling on a trim, classic fit. The tees are available for $20 each or three for $50. Shop online and get more information at www.freshwhitetee.com.

After Misha Barton put Keds back on the wish lists of the rich, the famous, the OC fan, the hipster and the creative type, the 94-year-old shoe company is re-releasing some of their iconic models or producing them with a twist. Reminiscent of the 1930s, this month they came out with a shoe with a jute sole and a pair with a vintage colored canvas.

While they are offering one limited edition pair drawn from their century old collection every month, they’re also extending the realm of possible Keds by initiating a “Design Your Own” program on their website. Something already quite familiar to all Nike fans, it, as suggested, lets anyone design their own pair based on the brand’s most popular models. While the site offers a number of basic colours and ideas, the apprentice designers can download images from their own photographic collections and even sell their final designs via the Keds’ website. While mother’s day has already passed, your father’s is coming up, and no dad look cooler than with photos of his kids on his feet. (Check out the customized version our editorial assistant Dan made for his dad, above).
