When lifestyle brands or big corporations team up with documentary filmmakers on a project, the odds are 50-50 that the end result will be as inspired as the idea. For every Hoop Dreams, there’s a Jonas Brothers: 3D Concert Experience. But Quiksilver’s latest project is one that both makes sense for the iconic surf brand, while also bringing something new to the table.

The company has teamed up with director Matt Beauchesne at Irons Brothers Productions, on a new film called “Scratching the Surface.” This beautifully shot HD surf film documents the adventures of professional surfer Julian Wilson, along with friends and fellow professionals Dane Reynolds, Taj Burrow, Dusty Payne, Mick Fanning and others as they spend a year hitting some of the world’s most beautiful surf spots. Destinations include South Africa, Australia, Indonesia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, California, Hawaii, France, Spain and Brazil. In other words, viewers are in for a scenic ride, that also packs a surprisingly emotional punch, as the 22-year-old Wilson experiences the trials and tests that come with growing up in the sport’s public eye, while simultaneously trying to conquer his own demons and — often surfing-unrelated — fears.

While we wish we were better surfers (we barely stayed up on our board the couple of times we’ve tried to ride a wave), we loved the pacing and cinematography of the film. The crew used everything from motor boats to helicopters to capture their shots, while incorporating shots from a so-called, non-intrusive “Phantom Camera.” The film is definitely worth checking out for the shooting quality on its own.

“Scratching the Surface” premieres next week in California. Check out the trailer below:

Best friends with late rising art star Dash Snow and renowned for openings that demand police reinforcement to disperse the crowds, Ryan McGinley is quintessential Lower East Side art scene royalty. Like most aristocrats, he sticks to his own and recently convinced American beauty queen Carolyn Murphy (Estée Lauder’s lead face since 2002) to partake in his short film creation entitled, “Entrance Romance (it felt like a kiss).” Backed with monastic chants, the frames capture Murphy’s slow motion facial physiognomy dealing with exposure to fire, the lick of a dog’s tongue and collision with a fish bowl (and live goldfish). The result is a combination of the intimate intensity from McGinley’s more recent black and white nude portraits, and the perverse awkwardness of his more famous earlier work, in which apparently unstaged carefree – and usually naked – teenagers run through highways or cavort in trees. As for whether this film is inspired, spiritual art or just a misguided, misogynistic mess? Well, that’s up for you to decide. Check out the video below:

The event, sponsored by New York-based arts collective INTERWOVEN, features designers threeASFOUR and Henrik Vibskov, as well as artist Peggy Noland, among others, as they unveil unique textile-focused performance art, fashion presentations and film screenings.

On the evening of July 23rd, New York-based fashion collective threeASFOUR, whose designers hail from Lebanon, Israel, and Tajikistan, will collaborate on a performance highlighting their ethereal and sculptural approach to textile design, while provoking a discussion of an individual’s role within society. Their medium and format: live models and actors onstage (see photo at left), performing a ritualistic altering and reshaping of fabric.

The July 24th program, meantime, will feature the first American appearance by Copenhagen-based design duo Henrik Vibskov and Andreas Emenius. Vibskov (who we profiled in Issue 6) and Emenium are unveiling their site-specific installation called “The Circular Series,” which uses the contrasts of a large, rigid geometric structure to speak to the ideas of human rituals and social constructs.

In addition to the installations, the event will feature a screening of Vibskov and Emenius’ Project 8 (see top photo) and Project 9 (set to an original soundtrack scored by one of our favorite Swedish recording artists, Fever Ray) and threeASFOUR’s video collaboration with Yoko Ono.

Noland’s imaginative and sometimes controversial work will engage guests as they enter the Museum with a performance that experiments with enlarged and deformed shapes on the body, creating an unorthodox silhouette, and speaking to an ongoing social idea of high versus low culture, art versus commerce.

Throughout the two-night event, guests will have the opportunity to chat with the artists and participate in a number of hands-on, interactive exhibits and artworks. Think of it as an event that engages all the senses, while simultaneously providing some informative discussion and debate. Tickets to the event are $20. For more information, check out www.interwovenarts.com.

Tom Ford made a successful foray from designer to director last year, with the release of his critically-acclaimed film, A Single Man. Based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood and set in L.A. in 1962, the film tells the story of a gay British college professor (played achingly by Colin Firth) struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his long time partner. Underscored by a poignant soundtrack and with Ford’s signature attention to detail, it’s a movie that is at once romantic and solemn; a film about the isolation that is an inherent part of the human condition, and ultimately, the importance of finding beauty in the seemingly insignificant moments of life.

A Single Man scored Firth an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, as well as three Golden Globe noms, including a Best Actor nod for Firth and a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Julianne Moore.

We loved the film when it came out in theaters and are thrilled to see it finally released on DVD next week. To celebrate the occasion, we’re giving a few lucky readers the chance to take home a copy of A Single Man on DVD for free.

It’s been a busy few months for the members of Broken Social Scene. In addition to a great new album (their first in five years) and a new book, the group is part of a new movie that hits theaters this weekend. Directed by Bruce McDonald and featuring Broken Social Scene at their free 2009 concert in Toronto, the film, titled This Movie is Broken, is billed as a “rock show romance.” Rather than going the traditional “rock documentary” route, the band cast a group of unsung actors to tell the story of a young couple rushing to attend the BSS show. With a breezy script — penned by Don McKellar — and propelled by an anthemic soundtrack — comprised of old favorites, and new songs from the “Forgiveness Rock Record” — the film is perfect for the summer, for the nostalgia and for the music fans wanting to see Broken Social Scene’s cherished songs come to life.

The film is out in select cities now. Check out the trailer below:
