TIFF Recap 2011: Girls WIth Guns

September 21st, 2011

Undoubtedly one of the best films we saw at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival was Violet and Daisy. Directed by Geoffrey Fletcher of Precious fame, the film follows two teenage assassins Violet (Alexis Bledel) and Daisy (Saoirse Ronan) as they are forced to deal with the consequences of an assignment gone awry. We had the opportunity to chat with Fletcher about the film and asked him about the film’s imagery, girls with guns, and the “Internal Bleeding Dance.”

TIFF Recap 2011: The Moth Diaries Take On Twilight

September 20th, 2011

Corduroy’s coverage of the 36th annual Toronto International Film Festival continues with Mary Harron’s latest directorial offering, The Moth Diaries. Starring Sarah Gadon, Scott Speedman, and Corduroy favorite Lily Cole (be sure to check out our interview with her in our latest issue), the flim, adapted from the novel of the same name, is a teenage vampire tale which chronicles the breakdown of female friendship when a mysterious new student, Ernessa (played by Cole) enters the picture. And while the premise may seem like it was spun straight out of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight franchise, the similarities end in the very first scene. The Moth Diaries is both darker and deeper, presenting a less superficial take on the popular genre, focusing on the intensity of female friendship and the bonds that are formed and broken in the process.

We loved the casting in this film. As the vampire Ernessa, Cole’s Victorian doll-like beauty combined with her sinister portrayal of the character was one of the most successful aspects of the film. Another actress who caught our eye was Sarah Gadon (Lucy), who we had the pleasure of meeting at Corduroy’s TIFF and Issue 9 launch party a few nights later. Not only is Gadon wonderful at playing one of Ernessa’s innocent victims, the Canadian actress’ future appears to be fully in bloom, starring in the highly buzzed-about A Dangerous Method (which also premiered at TIFF) as well as Cosmopolis, both directed by David Cronenberg. The Moth Diaries, meantime, is set to be released later this year.

TIFF Recap 2011: The Things That Go Bump In The Night

September 19th, 2011

Another edition of the Toronto International Film Festival has come and gone and we were fortunate enough to attend many of the screenings this year and meet some of the actors in town for the week and a half-long event. We’ll be recapping some of our favourite films and moments from TIFF all this week, beginning today with the North American premiere of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s Intruders.

Starring Clive Owen, Carice van Houten, and Ella Purnell, the film explores the universal experience of childhood fear, and how fear can become a legacy, passed on across generations. Intruders follows John Farrow (Owen) as he tries to protect his daughter (Purnell) from an intruder who keeps breaking into her room. We had the opportunity to chat with Fresnadillo and Owen about the film and talkied about the parent-child relationship, their own childhood fears, and the timelessness of authentic filmmaking.

Surface to Air Launches New York Boutique

September 13th, 2011

Fashion’s Night Out may have been promoted as the biggest fashion party of the year, but we get a head start on the festivities the night before at the launch of Surface to Air’s first-ever U.S. boutique in New York last Wednesday. Located on Mercer Street in Soho, the French label’s latest flagship is a 2500 square-foot space of marble, concrete, wood and slate, designed in collaboration with architect Frederico Masotto.

Hundreds of people packed into the store to check out the new digs (and the new threads) while jamming to music by Neon Indian and Justin Miller. We spotted Kid Cudi, Corduroy Issue 8 featured artist Daniel Arsham, and the forever cool Michael Stipe and Kim Gordon among the guests, who seemed to spend as much time looking through the racks of clothes as they did grabbing the drinks. And when you’re promoting the launch of a clothing store, that’s always a good sign.

The new store will carry Surface to Air’s full line of men’s and women’s collections, which mix the casual cool of Paris with the stylish and edgy attitude of New York. We loved the vibe of the party and the looks for fall. We also got word of some upcoming projects and collaborations with the likes of Cudi, Leigh Lezark, and Gordon… which makes us even more excited to see what Surface to Air has in store.
