What does it take to convert an old ice-cream truck into a mobile art gallery? A couple of creative individuals and a scoop (or two) of ingenuity. That’s the story behind the ArtSee Vehicle — an art space on wheels that’s currently showing at the Half Gallery in New York. The ArtSee is one of the first mobile arts laboratories to hit the city’s streets, housing installations, sound-pieces, performances, paintings, sketches and videos. While the current model being shown in only in “demo” stage, a full-scale, organizers say drive-able model will be ready by next year.
Once completed, the ArtSee will be equipped with numerous extensions—a platform stage, video projectors, a podium—with the ability to fold out and open up to facilitate such projects. The goal is to literally expand contemporary art and design into areas not typically served by traditional art institutions. The ArtSee will be touring the Tri-State area in the spring, with more ArtSee Vehicles set to join the fleet to tour the country, bringing art and art education to communities nationwide.
The ArtSee can be seen at Half Gallery, 206 Forsyth Street. The show will continue until September 23rd. For more information, to www.facebook.com/misterartsee.
